How Can I Keep From Singing?

Dec 02, 2018 | Clint Tolbert

What are your Christmas essentials? What traditions, decorations, or practices if lost would leave December just another frigid month of the year, instead of a season of celebration?

Though it may not have come immediately to mind, I'd like to suggest to you that "song" is one of these essentials that makes the season what it is for nearly all of us. Imagine this coming month without song; without Christmas carols and hymns, with bells and horns. Would it feel like Christmas at all?!?

In the scripture we read that Jesus' birth was accompanied by song from the very beginning. The angels sing announcing the birth of the Savior while Mary and others sing in awed response. Even the great Messianic prophecy in Isaiah is known to us largely because Handel put it to melody.... "For unto us a child is born...." It's as if we can't help but sing at the birth of our Savior, so important is song to the celebration of Christmas.

Series Information

During this Advent season in a sermon series entitled, "How Can I Keep From Singing" we'll spend time reflecting on the songs within the scripture that accompany our Savior's birth. My hope is that these biblical songs will not only inform the songs we sing, but the spirit we bring to this special time of year.
