In the Community
Mosaic Ministries seeks to transform South Toledo through education, the power of the Gospel, and sustainable community development. The members of First Pres Maumee partner with Mosaic Ministries in many ways, including purchasing supplies, cooking and serving meals, offering scholarship funds, including children from Mosaic Ministries in our yearly VBS, and buying groceries for families at Easter, Thanksgiving and Mother's Day. You can volunteer your time with Baby University (a ministry to new and expecting parents), Beauty Project (a ministry to adolescent girls), and/or serving dinner to folks. Contact Annette Blair to learn more.
We recently worked together as a congregation, engaging the community, to provide $300,000 to Mosaic Ministries for their Lodge Building Project. Construction for the Lodge is now underway.
Additionally, First Pres Maumee partners with Mosaic's Baby University to provide books for parents and guardians graduation from the Baby University program. Every year, we hold a book drive to collect monetary and book donations to give to Baby U.
Maumee City Schools
First Pres Maumee has committed $100,000 beginning in 2019 for the next 10 years to support new school district initiatives that are aligned with the district's strategic plan and the church's mission. A few of the programs we partner with Maumee City Schools on include Learning to Serve, Young Life, Read and Relate, and the Instrument Bank, among others.
First Pres Maumee has donated winter coats for students, helped teachers set up their classrooms during back-to-school time, provided school supplies, and help fund and supply leadership for the Feed My Starving Children meal pack held every two years at Wayne Trail Elementary School.
We're so proud to partner with Community Learning Centers and Maumee City Schools to bring the community of Maumee a new afterschool program for students K-3 designed to raise literacy levels, improve core academic performance, strengthen social relationships, and provide unique enrichment opportunities.
As a church, we support this mission by providing financial support and support via volunteers from our church and community. We have pledged to donate $10,000 per year over the course of 10 years to this influential program. Supporting this program means a lot to us, not only in our continued partnership with Maumee City Schools and our new partnership with Community Learning Centers, but to provide much needed support to children within our community. As we come together with our mission partners, we hope to improve children’s reading and early literacy achievement scores, improve student’s growth mindset, and provide support to families and children within our community.
First Pres Maumee's goal is to ensure that every child in Maumee City Schools has the opportunity to play a musical instrument. We work closely with music teachers Eric Boswell and Wasim Hawary to provide instruments for both the band and the orchestra. In 2015, we held the first instrument drive, asking community members to donate used instruments. Since then, 25 used and refurbished instruments have been donated to students who are not able to afford the rental of an instrument, allowing them to join the band or orchestra. In addition, we have provided nearly $10,000 toward the purchase of new instruments for both the middle school and high school band and orchestra of Maumee City Schools.
Learning to Serve
For the last four years on the Martin Luther King holiday, First Pres Maumee has collaborated with Wayne Trail Elementary School to provide a morning of community service and an afternoon of fun. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of service projects around the Maumee community like Sunshine Communities, Hannah’s Socks, and the Under One Roof Food Pantry. To support the families of students who serve, First Pres Maumee offers lunch and an afternoon of games, movies, and fellowship once the service projects are complete.
First Pres Maumee sponsors Young Life at Maumee High School. Young Life is a ministry that meets students right where they are and lets them know there is a community that cares about them. Just one example of a way Young Life cares for the Maumee City Schools community is by providing donuts to students and staff each month. In addition, Young Life volunteers have helped chaperone student dances and served as volunteer coaches for athletic teams.
Read and Relate
We are strategically investing in Wayne Trail Elementary School, a public school which is only 1.2 miles away from our church. Our key project, Read and Relate, matches volunteers from the church to work one-on-one with a 4th- or 5th-grade student on a weekly basis during their lunch hour. Through this program, we hope to build confidence, skill, and relationship. Contact the church office to learn more.
Adventures in Education
Adventures In Education offers a fun and enriching learning environment for children in grades K-8. At their various camps and classes, your children can gain confidence and grow as a performer on the stage, learn a variety of skills and fun facts about science and history, and make new friends that share the same interests.
Adventures in Education uses First Pres Maumee's Fellowship Hall to both rehearse and to perform their musicals and plays throughout the year.
Muslim Christian Dialogue
Since April 2013, our church has intentionally sought to have an open dialogue with our Muslim neighbors through the United Muslim Association of Toledo. Modeled after a program established by the Presbyterian Frontier Foundation, we have worked hard to establish friendships and trust between people of different faiths.
Acknowledging the significant religious and cultural differences that exist between us, the group has worked to bridge the gap between those differences through honest discussion and engaging conversations.
The ultimate purpose of the dialogue is to show the love and authority of Jesus, who commanded His followers to love God and love neighbor. As a church, we are called to be ambassadors of the faith, engaging every member of the community in which we live.
Search-lite Community Church
Since November 2014, our historic chapel has served as home for the weekly gathering of Search-lite Community Church. Led by Rev. Lee Williams, Search-lite has been the recipient of a PC(USA) grant for New Worshipping Communities and is committed to multicultural expressions of worship.
We lament our nation’s past and current sins of racism and hostility. This partnership between First Pres Maumee and Search-lite is one form of our protest against injustice.
Members of each congregation are invited to share in educational and relational opportunities during the equipping hour (10:15-11 am), prior to both the First Pres Maumee modern service and the Search-lite worship service. Our desire is to grow in friendship and trust and that opportunities for shared worship and mission experiences will increase.
In January, congregations from both First Pres Maumee and Search-lite combine to host an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday joint worship service for the Maumee community. We also collaborate for special services, such as Christmas Eve. Our prayer is that our partnership will broaden the understanding of the Church in the heart and minds of those touched by both ministries and that our partnership will reflect the light of the Reconciling Christ in the greater Toledo area.
Thanks to a generous and anonymous donation, First Pres Maumee has been able to purchase a home in Maumee. “The Blessings House”, as it will be known, serves as short term housing for a deserving family from the community. After some renovations, a mother and her two children are living in the home while she works and finishes up her college degree.
